Rafting - Tara
This exciting break combines the delights of Sarajevo and the breathtaking views over the scenic canyons enjoying delicious organic food and wine produced by your friendly hosts, while exploring the best rafting in Europe. The Tara River emerges from the confluence of the Opasnica and Veruša Rivers in the Dinaric Alps of Montenegro, flows 144km northward and converges with the Piva River near the Bosnian border to form the Drina River. The Tara River is the largest European supply of drinking water and exhibits many characteristics, unique in the world. The Tara River cuts the Tara River Gorge, the deepest canyon in Europe, second only to the famous Grand Colorado Canyon , at 78km in length and 1,300m at its deepest, displaying over 50 waterfalls. The canyon is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a part of Durmitor national park. Alongside the river are rain forests consisting of pines, up to 50m in height in addition to Yew trees and other rare species of conifers. The conifer is considered a holy tree and crosses and amulets are made from it which some people believe protect from illnesses and evil spells. Additionally there are rocky and pebbly terraces, sandy beaches, high cliffs and more than 80 large caves alongside the canyon. Tailor made tours, to suit all interest and requirements as part of a great adventure await you – rafting, swimming, rain forest hiking, safari and of course lots of food and drinks!
Arriving in Sarajevo at noon the city tour commences with a welcoming lunch in a local restaurant in the old town when a traditional meal will be served. Transfer to the camp is two hours from Sarajevo followed by dinner and party till late and an overnight stay.
Departure is from 12 o'clock noon from Sljivansko rafting place at the foot of Drenova Hill which is 3 km upstream from the famous bridge over the Durdevica Tara River. The early part of the ride is calm, though even the smaller waves and whirls bring excitement to this part of the canyon and there are beautiful camera opportunities. After 20 minutes the rafts reach the small river Ljutica, the shortest river in Europe. The river springs up from a rock and splashes and pours into the Tara River, some 100 metres further downstream. A similar smaller river cuts across the stream of the Tara River also.
Following a visit to an old mill, later on in the tour we come across a five-arch bridge, which is a masterpiece of architecture, which crosses over the Tara River, as the photograph on the right. From the bridge the rapids really begin. Further down the river we come across a gigantic stone called "Obrucina" which divides the river. 100 metres further on there is a monastery called "Archangel Michael".
The ride is then calmer for a further 2 km until the fall Bijele Ploce and then the ride continues to be calm until the narrow passage under the green terrace. The green terrace is an important historical site as there are ruins of the old monastery, at Archangel Michael, located there. The monastery itself was built in the XIV century and represents an orthodox monument dating back to the Ottoman Empire.
Further history greets us as we travel further down the river when we approach the Levertar settlement within the remains of a Roman bridge. The ride is calm for the next 500m after which there is the excitement of both the Neviden Falls and the Zeleni Virovi Falls following which there is a break for swimming and a visit to the "Eden Gardens". Following the next rapids at Adzikin we enter the Port of Zugica where we stop at a refreshing café.
Starting up again after a further half hour we reach the springs at Musova and above these beautiful springs are forests reaching as far as the eye can see. The Bijela Springs are a further 1½ km downstream and then after a further 100 metres there is a slalom like ride consisting of the Crne Ploce Falls, the Obodina Rapids which has one of the biggest curves on the River Tara. There is a similar slalom course a few minutes later on the lower Obodina Rapids.
Following a slow ride across a narrow river bed at "Laza's Stone" we pass 30m high cliffs and along the deepest part of the River Tara which is up to 16 metres. The next 3 km are very tranquil and flow into the confluence of the Rivers Draga and Tara. We then reach a sandy bank at Radovan's Port. If conditions of the River Tara are good Radovan's Port is reached at about 4.00 pm for lunch and sightseeing. There is then a dinner, music and a late bar.
Rising at around 8 o'clock there is breakfast before departing at 10 o'clock. Following several smaller falls we come across the village of Tepca and we encounter the old hanging wire bridge where the depth of the canyon is some 1200 m. The fauna and flora in these areas are wonderfully overgrown providing lush greenery, from pines to meadows.
Shortly we come across the "Tepacki Bukovi" and the Bajlovica Sige. These are beautiful cliffs overgrown with moss with cascading water. At the top there is a cave and underground lake.
Shortly after we reach the falls at Jovicica Siga following which we reach, after a series of falls, the camp at Brstanovica some 40 km downstream. Here we are able to finish the day and enjoy a relaxing time and drinks at the bar.
Bosnian part - Third and fourth day
Starting a little bit later at 11 o'clock from Brstanovica, travelling to Bastasi this stretch of river contains the most exciting rapids and waterfalls. Over the 15 km there are 12 falls of varying characteristics. The Brstanovica Rapids are famous for their length being 300 metres and being both frothy and exciting. Following this the river is tranquil but not for long as a string of rapids then await us at Pecina, Borovi, Varda, Celije and then rapids at Vjernovica which have the greatest waves and flow into the rapids at Grab and Zelenac. During the ride the speed boats can reach 30 km per hour and the ride to Camp Bastasi is 3 hours or the ride can be extended to a total of 7 hours when reaching Focha, accommodation in the camp, dinner and drink till late. This is very exciting Tour.
